Minnie attended a summer band camp at American Fork Jr. High for three weeks in June. Even though she had already played flute in Arizona for 5 months, we signed her up for the beginning class since there is no band in 5th grade in Utah so she hadn't been practicing much. We thought it would be a good refresher course so she will be prepared to start up in band again this fall. In three weeks, they took students who had never played before and taught them enough to perform two songs for a concert on the last day of camp. The concert had each instrument play separately. The flutes played first but we stayed for the whole concert and we were pretty impressed with what they taught these kids in 3 weeks (just one hour of instruction a day.) The flutes played the Theme from Harry Potter and the Theme from Enchanted (very short versions.) Minnie learned to play some new notes and enjoyed playing again. The intermediate class also played at the concert--they played all the instruments together as a band. At the end, they had the American Fork High School band come marching into the auditorium in full uniforms and play a few songs for the kids. It was pretty awesome and a great way to show the kids what they can be involved with if they keep practicing and playing! (The American Fork High School Marching Band is considered one of the best in the state--last November they marched in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in NYC.) Jumble could have done the advanced summer band camp but it was only one week and was the same week she had Youth Conference. We are bummed she didn't get to attend this year.
